The value of community within neighborhoods

About Our Project

In the midst of the chatter about rising crime rates in San Francisco, a powerful quote from a CBS News article captures the essence: "People are saying, 'Oh it's a terrible place and there's crime everywhere.' And I think that that's unfortunately had an impact on people coming to visit." Feeling the pulse of these concerns, our crew of six students from UCLA's Digital Humanities 101 course decided to dive deep.

We're all about exploring the real stories of Airbnb owners and local residents, grappling with the effects of crime on San Francisco's tourist scene. Understanding that crime, where you stay, and how connected you feel all weave into your experience, our project takes a close look at this intricate tapestry within the vibrant streets of San Francisco.

Getting down to the nitty-gritty, we crunched numbers from Airbnb listings and police reports, unveiling some pretty surprising patterns. We are not just talking stats; we are unpacking the human side of it all. Our findings shine a light on the dance between short-term rentals and crime rates in different pockets of the city, going beyond the headlines. Fancy a deeper dive? Swing by our website, where we spill the beans on our data, methods, and what we have uncovered. Let's unravel the threads together and get a closer look at what makes San Francisco tick, from safety vibes to community connections and everything in between.
